The Netherlands national football team will play a match against Sweden on Saturday at NRG Stadium, which has been specially designated as the Houston Stadium for the 2026 World Cup. And once the World Cup is over, it will be known by an old name again. Construction of the stadium began in 2000 and was inaugurated in 2002. It cost €303 million to build and seats 72,000 spectators. It is primarily the stadium of the American football team Houston Texans, but also hosts occasional football matches, rodeos, motor sports and concerts. Gold Cup matches were also held here in 2005, 2007, 2009, 2011, 2019 and 2021. After its opening in 2002, it was the first American football stadium in the world to feature a roof that could be extended outside the stadium when needed. It was renamed NRG Stadium in 2014. However, for the 2026 World Cup, FIFA wants to rebrand it as Houston Stadium. After the World Cup it will be known again as the Reliant Stadium, as the name is better known locally.
