Fantasy Premier League: Five tips from last season's FPL champion - BBC Sport.
Do you want to win your Fantasy Premier League (FPL) mini-league but need some expert advice? Introducing Erik Ibsen, a 23-year-old Danish medical student who ranked first out of 11 million players last season, even though he had never played the game before. Everton supporter Ibsen has already planned his entire chip and transfer strategy for the upcoming season amid summer trials, but he insists that lack of experience and a more relaxed attitude could be a huge advantage. "Being 1000% fresh helped me win," he told BBC Sport. "I didn't spend money on any services or listen to influencers; I used all my research and choices." But what exactly were the magical "choices" that made Ibsen so successful? The Reigning FPL champion has agreed to share his secrets with the BBC. "The greatest thing is consistency," says Ibsen. "A lot of people have a bad week and then they give up on the game. I didn't start well and was eight millionth in the world in the first week, while the second-placed person was in the top 100. It's easy to forget that there are 38 game weeks and things can change so much. A lot of people have a bad week and then they try to fix everything. Rather, be patient. If you can plan for the next three or five weeks, that's a great start." Ibsen added, "Who are the cheap essential players for your FPL team? Which option is better? Concentrate your funds on a few superstars or spread the budget around to get 16 reliable players?" Ibsen thinks the latter is better. "I've thought about the value of the whole team in every draft I've ever done," he says. "One of my biggest tips is to look for cheap enablers — those budget players who provide value and enable you to add bigger players. Brighton's Pascal Gross is a great choice if you want to save money, but at the same time get an excellent player. He takes penalties, free-kicks, corners and is available for just £5.5 million. You need these options. Also, think of players who can get a lot of Defcon (Defensive Contribution) points. That was the only thing I focused on from the start last season and it paid off. Every week was pretty much okay because I had Defcon points." Ibsen added, "I think it's fun to add your own touch to the game, but if you want to be really competitive and still have your own team of players, you have to take an extra step of research. I'm an Everton supporter, so I like Theron Barry, but he shares minutes with Beto, so not a good idea as an FPL asset. Blending these two worlds is possible, although it will be difficult for some teams. If you are a Manchester City supporter, then of course you can choose Erling Haaland. If you're a Hull supporter, good luck." Speaking about Haaland, Ibsen said last season's top scorer was "almost always" in his team. The City forward is currently the most expensive player in FPL history at £15.5 million, but Ibsen still plans to include him. "There's no one like Haaland," Ibsen said. "Yes, there's no one like him, but you can still build a great team around him because the others are so cheap. I don't have to give up much. A team with Haaland, Florian Wirtz, Dominik Jozboslai, Joa Pedro, a good goalkeeper and a good defense is possible. Besides, he makes the game really easy. If you are in doubt about who to choose as captain, you can always choose him. He's a great player." Ibsen also believes players are undervaluing transfer retention, where players can rollover up to five transfers to use at once. "You can hold five transfers in a week, which is incredible because it becomes like a mini-wildcard," he said. "My strategy last season was usually to switch two or three players at a time. I was very patient, saving up to do the big rotation. If Chelsea play Hull and then Ipswich and you want to treble the number of Chelsea players in those two games, you have to be able to make two or three moves to make that happen." Nine clubs are bringing in new permanent managers to start the upcoming Premier League season - the highest number for a top-level opening weekend. Ibsen reckons the new Premier League season is "the hardest to predict so far". But, when pressed, which players do the reigning champions expect to succeed? "I "Tottenham are big fans of defence," Ibsen said. "If Spurs play like they did at the end of last season, £5m per player would be huge value for their defensive options. Manchester City and Chelsea's attacks look great. As for Liverpool, sorry to say that I'm an Everton supporter, but I'd advise them to go heavy in attack. The attacking system was so good at Bournemouth under Andoni Araiola, something I think he will repeat at Liverpool. Go attack them, but I wouldn't trust their defense. Of course, you have to have some luck for your predictions. I admit, if I wasn't lucky I wouldn't have won. Everything I touched was golden.
What will happen next?
Now Ibsen's tips will spark discussion among fantasy Premier League players, and they will try to build their own teams following his advice. By learning from his experience, players can improve their budgeting and player selection strategies. In the upcoming season, his suggestions will bring fresh perspective to the Fantasy Premier League competition.
