Scottish Premiership club Dundee head coach Steven Pressley has signed a new contract and says it is the "right decision" for him. Pressley said there was "a lot of trouble" ahead for the club, as several key players left the club. The Dundee club have not disclosed details of Pressley's new deal, but it is believed to be a one-year rolling deal. The 52-year-old coach succeeded Tony Dochty in June 2025 and helped Dundee finish eighth in the Scottish Premiership last season. "We've been discussing [a new contract] for some time," Pressley said. "And of course I'm happy to get it done. Personally, it was very important. I'm living here without my family and my wife and sometimes people forget that coaches are people too."
Under the new deal, Pressall's wife is moving back to Scotland and he says being alone has been challenging. "We're vulnerable," Pressley noted. "We have feelings like everyone else. The life of a coach can be tough and lonely at times. When you're a little isolated and away from the most important people in your life, it becomes challenging."
Personal benefits aside, Pressley believes Dundee is a good fit for his professional life and feels the club is moving in a positive direction, despite the departure of several players this summer.
Defenders Luke Graham and Billy Koumateo have moved to Stoke City and Charlton Athletic respectively. Goalkeeper John McCracken has moved to Bradford City, while key loan players such as Ian Dhanda, Cameron Congreve and Tony Yogan have returned to their parent clubs. "I'm very honest about the situation," Pressley said. "There is still a lot of trouble for us. We lost a lot of important, influential players from last year. It is very difficult to replace them. We brought in some players, who believe in us, but it will take time to settle. For sure, it will take time. It happened with the players last season and it will be the same this year. There has to be some kind of patience and understanding."
Pressley said the support of managing director John Nels was key to extending his contract and said Motherwell's recent success could serve as a blueprint for Dundee. "There's a lot of room for improvement," he said. "It's hard to put a time frame on it, but I think we've already got a club in Scotland that's a great example for others. Motherwell are collecting huge transfer fees for players. They're developing their club within themselves. They've qualified for Europe. So it should be an aspiration for us."
Dundee open their Premiership season against champions Celtic on Monday night, in what Pressley described as a "terrible challenge". "Celtic have not lost an opening day match at home for over 76 years," he said. "But I like those challenges. I think our players respond well to those challenges."
What will happen next?
